A short history of Ethereum

Is there a better time to explore the history of the world’s second-oldest and biggest crypto than on its birthday? Here’s how Ethereum started its life.

Ethereum’s “genesis block” was launched on July 30th, 2015, and was founded by cryptocurrency pioneer Vitalik Buterin. Or at least he was the one that wrote the white paper explaining the concept behind ETH.

Although Buterin was the first to mention Ethereum, he is just one of the seven people considered to be the founders of the token, which includes Charles Hoskinson, Anthony Di Iorio, Gavin Wood, Amir Chtrit, Jefferey Wilcke, Mihai Alisie, and Joseph Lubin.

During Ethereum’s first outing, $18 million worth of the coin was sold, which was ironically paid for in Bitcoin (one of its only other competitor at the time). Although the coins were sold, the Ethereum blockchain didn’t go live until July 30th, almost a year after the ICO. That meant holders couldn’t use or move their ETH for an entire year after purchasing it! But their patience more than paid off.

Because in just a few months, it went from just under $2.00 to $15.00/coin. That’s a small, insignificant 650% (that was irony). But that was just the beginning, a few months later (from July 2016 until January 2017) it climbed to a staggering $1,400 and again surged to $4,000 in 2021.

The Ethereum network is now one of the most powerful, diverse, and accessible networks in the crypto sphere. It allows the implementation of dApps that run the gamut of applications, from decentralised exchanges to games and even digital art.

With new protocol upgrades inevitably coming and more projects being launched on the network fuelled by ETH, the horizon for growth is seemingly boundless.
Now you too can become part of Ethereum’s growth by joining PrimeXBT’s Ethereum’s Birthday Giveaway!
