You check the S&P 500 at lunch and it’s up 1%. Nvidia is up 2.5%, and on a red day the gap runs the other way. To trade Nvidia stock (NVDA), you buy the shares through a broker, or take a long or short position with a derivative such as a CFD or an option, during Nasdaq hours of 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. New York time. Getting the trade right depends less on the AI story than on sizing for that extra swing and on the four nights a year when Nvidia reports.
This guide covers what moves NVDA, the ways to get exposure, the hours that matter, how the stock has reacted to its last four earnings reports, and how to size a position so one bad night doesn’t decide the account.

What moves Nvidia’s share price
Nvidia used to be a graphics-card company with a gaming business. It’s now a data center company. In fiscal Q2 2027 (the three months to late July 2026), data center revenue was $89.0 billion out of $96.2 billion in total, about 92.5%, according to the company’s earnings release. So the stock trades on one question: how much the largest cloud and AI companies will spend on chips, and for how long.
Four inputs carry most of the weight:
- Hyperscaler capex. On the August call, CFO Colette Kress said capital spending by the top five hyperscalers was expected to reach nearly $800 billion in 2026 and $1.3 trillion in 2027. When Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet or Meta raise or cut their spending plans, NVDA often moves on their report day, not its own.
- Guidance. Nvidia gives a revenue forecast for the next quarter, not the full year. For fiscal Q3 2027 it guided to $108.0 billion, plus or minus 2%. The market prices that forecast more than the quarter just reported.
- Gross margin. Guidance for Q3 was 74.0%, and on the call management said rising memory prices would push margins lower in Q4. Each point of gross margin on a $100 billion quarter is $1 billion of profit, which is why traders watch it as closely as revenue.
- China and export rules. Nvidia’s Q3 outlook assumes no data center compute revenue from China. Headlines on US export licences, or on Chinese orders, move the stock without changing the current quarter at all.
Then there’s the index effect. Nvidia is the largest holding in both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100, so flows into and out of index funds buy and sell NVDA automatically. On a day when big funds de-risk, the stock can fall with nothing company-specific in the news.
Ways to trade or invest in Nvidia
The choice comes down to three things: whether you want to own the shares, whether you want to be able to go short, and how much capital you want tied up.
| Method | You own the shares? | Can go short? | Main cost or risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buying shares | Yes | Only by borrowing shares, if your broker allows it | Full capital tied up; you collect the dividend |
| ETFs holding NVDA | Fund units, not NVDA directly | Through inverse funds or shorting the ETF | Fund fees; NVDA is only part of the exposure |
| Options | No (unless exercised) | Yes, with puts | Premium decays daily; volatility collapses after earnings |
| CFDs | No | Yes | Leverage magnifies losses; overnight financing charges |
Buying NVDA shares
This is the investor’s route. You pay the full price (one share was $216.47 at the October 20 close, and many brokers offer fractional shares), you hold it as long as you want, and you receive the $0.25 quarterly dividend. Your loss is capped at what you paid. The trade-off is capital: a 100-share position ties up about $21,600.
ETFs and index exposure
If you want Nvidia as part of a bet on AI or on US tech, an index or sector fund does it with less single-stock risk. NVDA was 7.93% of the SPY S&P 500 fund and 8.16% of the QQQ Nasdaq 100 fund on October 19, 2026, and about 20.5% of the SMH semiconductor ETF on October 17. A Nasdaq 100 position therefore carries a real slice of Nvidia’s earnings risk, diluted by about 100 other companies.
Options
Options let you define your risk in advance: the most a bought call or put can lose is the premium. The catch with NVDA is earnings. Implied volatility rises into each report and collapses after it, so an option can lose value even when you guessed the direction right. Before the August report, options priced a move of about 5.4%, according to ORATS, the lowest since 2021.
Trading Nvidia with CFDs
A contract for difference pays the change in the share price between opening and closing the trade. You don’t own the stock, you can go short as easily as long, and you put up margin rather than the full value. That last part cuts both ways.
An illustrative example, not tied to any platform’s terms: you open a CFD on 10 NVDA shares at $216, an exposure of $2,160. With a 20% margin requirement you put up $432. If the stock then falls 5.5%, as it did the day after Nvidia’s February 2026 report, the position loses about $119, or 27.5% of the margin you posted. The same move on shares you owned outright would cost you 5.5% of the capital. Leverage doesn’t change the stock’s move. It changes how much of your account that move takes.
CFD positions held overnight also carry a financing charge, so they suit trades measured in days or weeks better than multi-year holds.
Nvidia trading hours
NVDA trades on the Nasdaq. Regular hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday to Friday. Pre-market trading runs from 4:00 a.m. and after-hours trading until 8:00 p.m. ET, with thinner volume and wider spreads.
| Session | Eastern Time | UTC until Oct 30, 2026 | UTC from Nov 2, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-market | 4:00 to 9:30 a.m. | 08:00 to 13:30 | 09:00 to 14:30 |
| Regular session | 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. | 13:30 to 20:00 | 14:30 to 21:00 |
| After-hours | 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. | 20:00 to 00:00 | 21:00 to 01:00 |
US clocks go back on November 1, 2026, which is why the UTC times shift by an hour. Liquidity is deepest in the first and last hour of the regular session. The after-hours window matters more for NVDA than for most stocks because that’s when Nvidia publishes its results.
How NVDA reacts to earnings
Nvidia has beaten its own revenue forecast in each of the last four quarters. The stock fell after three of those reports.
| Report date | Quarter | Revenue vs company guidance | Next-day move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov 19, 2025 | Q3 FY2026 | $57.0bn (guide $54.0bn) | −3.2% |
| Feb 25, 2026 | Q4 FY2026 | $68.1bn (guide $65.0bn) | −5.5% |
| May 20, 2026 | Q1 FY2027 | $81.6bn (guide $78.0bn) | −1.8% |
| Aug 26, 2026 | Q2 FY2027 | $96.2bn (guide $91.0bn) | +8.7% |

The pattern is the point. A beat against Nvidia’s own forecast is already expected, so the stock trades on the size of the beat and on the next guide. In August the trigger was the outlook: Q3 guidance of $108 billion and talk of roughly 70% growth in fiscal 2028. Before that report, ORATS noted the stock had moved less than options implied after eight straight reports, which is a warning for anyone buying volatility into the print.
The next report is due on Tuesday, November 17, 2026, after the US close, the date Nvidia’s investor relations head gave at the end of the August call. For the full calendar, consensus and the levels to watch, see the PrimeXBT guides on trading earnings and reading an earnings report, and the earnings season hub.
Three practical rules follow from the table:
- Decide before the close whether you hold through the report. A stop-loss doesn’t protect you from an overnight gap; the order fills at the first available price, which can be well past your level.
- If you do hold, size the position for the implied move, not for a normal day. A 5% to 9% overnight swing has been the range in 2026.
- Watch the other AI giants’ reports too. Meta, Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon all report before Nvidia this season, and their capex numbers have moved NVDA on days Nvidia said nothing.
Analysing Nvidia before you trade
Fundamental analysis
Start with the forward multiple, not the trailing one. At the October 20 close NVDA traded on a trailing P/E of 27.4 and a forward P/E of 17.9, per StockAnalysis. The gap between the two is the market’s growth assumption written as a number: if earnings don’t rise as fast as analysts expect, the forward multiple was never as low as it looked.
Then check three lines in every report: data center revenue, gross margin against guidance, and the next-quarter revenue guide. Those three explain most of the moves in the earnings table above.
Technical analysis
NVDA is one of the most heavily traded stocks in the US (78.6 million shares changed hands on October 20, per StockAnalysis), so the common tools work as well on it as on anything. Traders tend to watch the 52-week high near $243 and the round numbers between, the 50-day and 200-day moving averages, and momentum readings such as the RSI. The PrimeXBT guide to support and resistance covers how to mark those levels.
One caveat specific to Nvidia: technical levels rarely survive an earnings gap. A chart setup that runs into November 17 is a bet on the report, whatever the chart says.
Risk management for NVDA trades
A beta of 2.22 means that, historically, a 1% move in the broad market has come with roughly a 2.2% move in Nvidia. Treat a position in NVDA as about twice the risk of the same dollar amount in an index fund, and size it that way.
- Size from the stop, not from the account. Decide how much of your account you’re willing to lose on the trade, set the stop where the idea is wrong, and let those two numbers set the position size. The risk-reward ratio guide walks through the arithmetic.
- Keep leverage low into events. In the CFD example above, one post-earnings day took more than a quarter of the margin. Doubling the leverage would have taken more than half.
- Know your concentration. If you already hold a Nasdaq 100 or S&P 500 fund, you already own Nvidia. A separate NVDA trade adds to that exposure rather than diversifying it.
- Use take-profit orders. A take-profit order closes a winning trade at a set level, which matters when the stock can give back a day’s gain after the close.
Trading Nvidia-linked markets with PrimeXBT
PrimeXBT gives you CFDs on global shares and on major stock indices from one account, funded with crypto or fiat. For exposure to the stocks that drive the AI trade, the Nasdaq 100 carries Nvidia as its largest weight, and the platform also lists share CFDs on chipmakers such as AMD. Positions can be long or short, with stop-loss and take-profit orders attached. Check the platform for the current list of share CFDs and live trading conditions before you trade.
Whatever route you take, mark November 17 in your calendar first. For NVDA, that date will matter more than any chart pattern this quarter.

Can you trade Nvidia stock outside US market hours?
Yes, through pre-market trading from 4:00 a.m. ET and after-hours trading until 8:00 p.m. ET, if your broker supports extended hours. Volume is thinner and spreads are wider than in the regular 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. session.
When is Nvidia's next earnings report?
Nvidia's investor relations team said on the August 26, 2026 call that the fiscal Q3 2027 results are due on Tuesday, November 17, 2026, after the US market close.
Does Nvidia pay a dividend?
Yes. Nvidia raised its quarterly dividend from $0.01 to $0.25 per share in May 2026, according to its 10-Q filing. At the October 20, 2026 price that is a yield of about 0.5%.
Why does Nvidia stock sometimes fall after beating estimates?
Nvidia has beaten its own revenue forecast in each of the last four quarters, so a beat is already priced in. The stock trades on the size of the beat and on the next quarter's guidance, which is why it fell after three of those four reports.
Is trading Nvidia with CFDs riskier than buying shares?
With leverage, yes. A CFD lets you open a position with a fraction of its value as margin, so the same percentage move in the stock costs a larger share of your capital. An overnight earnings gap can also jump past a stop-loss level.
