Altcoin open interest has overtaken Bitcoin's for the first time since December 2024, as Bitcoin dominance gets rejected at the 60% level and the altcoin market outside the top ten climbs past $200 billion. The same leverage build-up that is fueling the rotation also raises the risk of a sharp reversal.

Altcoin open interest overtakes Bitcoin's

Altcoin open interest has moved above Bitcoin's for the first time since December 2024, a shift that shows traders turning more aggressive on smaller tokens. Bitcoin dominance has opened September lower, rejected at the 60% level. The combined market cap of altcoins outside the top ten, meanwhile, has risen more than 10% since the start of the month.

That capital rotation has coincided with a large bet against Bitcoin itself: a whale opened a $50 million BTC short with 13x leverage with Bitcoin trading around the $80,000 resistance zone. The position suggests some big players might be taking Bitcoin profit while inflows are made into altcoins.

The December 2024 precedent

The last time altcoin open interest overtook Bitcoin's, in December 2024, Bitcoin had climbed to a record near $108,000 and the total crypto market cap reached around $3.91 trillion. But the rapid rise came with a leverage build-up that unwound fast: on December 9, the market saw over $1.5 billion in liquidations, with roughly $1.38 billion from long positions.

Altcoin open interest relative to market cap had climbed from 3.57% to 4.42% before cascading liquidations sent the figure back down to 3.96%, wiping out over $12.8 billion in altcoin open interest — the largest such drop on record at the time. That history is why the current setup, however similar in structure, deserves caution.

A $220-$230 billion test ahead

The altcoin market outside the top ten is now approaching the critical $220 billion to $230 billion rejection zone. Clearing it, with Bitcoin dominance declining and Bitcoin's own $80,000 level appearing to be an obstacle, could open the door to a broader altcoin cycle.

But if the level holds and rejects price again, a failed breakout with leveraged longs already in place could trigger a broad market sell-off rather than a new cycle.
