A trader tested nine major altcoins against a flat Bitcoin price and found most made little real progress, while only three clearly broke away from Bitcoin's grip.
Denis Liu, who trades under the handle "VirtualBacon" on X, compared altcoin prices on August 22 and September 9 — two dates when Bitcoin traded at nearly the same level. Bitcoin stood at $78,313 on August 22 and $78,440 on September 9, almost unchanged across the 17-day span.
Against that flat baseline, Ethereum fell 1%, XRP dropped 2%, Dogecoin declined 2%, Tron lost 1%, and Cardano fell 3%. Avalanche was the exception among the largest names, gaining 2% over the same period.
Liu found that six of the nine largest altcoins sat within a few percentage points of their August 22 levels, arguing that these tokens move higher when Bitcoin rises, then give back much of the gain once Bitcoin stalls. According to Liu: "A coin that only moves louder than Bitcoin is still following Bitcoin."
Liu pointed to exceptions: Solana gained 10%, BNB rose 9%, and Chainlink climbed 5% across the same comparison.
Those three coins, not the broader altcoin market, are behind the outperformance claims Liu set out to test.
