Bitcoin has slid back to near $84,000 after touching $87,220, and Bitfinex's analyst team says the advance needs sustained buying above $86,500 to continue. Sellers also defended the $87,334 ceiling on the four-hour chart, leaving buyers to hold a support band between $81,517 and $82,833 through the weekend. A softer September jobs report and a return of U.S. ETF inflows sit behind the latest swing.
Bitcoin retreated to $84,038 after reaching a session high of $87,220, a 0.99% session decline that pushed the price back toward the lower end of a range Bitfinex's analysts call central to the next move. The team told crypto.news that sustained trading above $86,500 is needed before the rally can extend toward Bitcoin's yearly opening price.
A wall of supply sits just overhead
Bitfinex found that 1.39 million BTC carries a cost basis between $84,000 and $86,500 as of Sep. 30, describing the concentration as overhead supply that incoming demand must absorb. According to crypto.news: "The question now is whether spot demand can sustain the move," the analysts said. On the downside, the team warned that sustained trading below $81,300 alongside continued ETF outflows would weaken the structure.
ETF buying returns after a one-day pause
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs drew $170.2 million in net inflows on Oct. 1, following roughly $149 million in net outflows the prior session. The renewed buying lifted Bitfinex's Absorption-to-Emission Ratio back toward five times daily issuance, after the measure had fallen from 25.6 times on Sep. 21 to 1.8 times on Sep. 29.
Sellers defend $87,334 as a familiar ceiling
On the four-hour chart, sellers pushed Bitcoin back down after buyers tested the $87,334 level, a boundary that has held on several tests since late 2025. Price now sits near $84,241, above the 38.2% retracement at $83,916 but below the broader swing area. A break lower would shift focus to the $81,517–$82,833 zone, where the rising 100-bar moving average near $82,773 also sits.
A softer jobs report added to the backdrop: September payrolls rose by just 29,000, against expectations of 90,000, while unemployment climbed to 4.2%. The report coincided with more than $120 million in Bitcoin short liquidations over 24 hours as price approached $87,000.
