Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan has narrowed the crypto market down to three trades: bitcoin against currency debasement, Zcash for privacy, and a decade-long tokenization push spanning Ethereum, Solana and Uniswap. Zcash crossed $1,000 for the first time since its 2016 launch this week, and Grayscale's new zcash ETF has already gathered $414.7 million.

Three Stories, One Portfolio

Matt Hougan, Bitwise's chief investment officer, usually talks about market structure rather than single assets. But in a recent interview he named three trades: bitcoin for currency debasement, Zcash for privacy, and a tokenization super cycle running through Ethereum, Solana and other tokens.

Bitcoin as a Debasement Hedge

Hougan's bitcoin case rests on the idea that governments borrow, currencies weaken, and hard assets win. He has framed debasement as one of five structural shifts behind his bull case, alongside regulatory progress, stablecoin growth, tokenization and revenue-generating tokens.

A Bitwise model of sovereign debt dynamics sketched an illustrative bitcoin fair value of $224,000. He has also argued the four-year cycle is dead, and last December he predicted bitcoin would set new all-time highs this year on institutional flows from wirehouses such as Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch.

Zcash Breaks $1,000 as an ETF Arrives

Hougan has been building toward a Zcash endorsement since May, when he called privacy crypto's next "killer app" as businesses tire of transacting on fully transparent ledgers.

ZEC crossed $1,000 on Thursday for the first time since its 2016 launch, reaching a $17 billion market cap that now ranks above Dogecoin. Grayscale converted its Zcash Trust into ZCSH, the first U.S. spot zcash ETF, on Aug. 25.

Grayscale's Steve Vanourny said at the launch that growing financial monitoring driven by AI would only increase demand for genuine privacy. The fund held $414.7 million by Sept. 3.

Tokenization as the Decade-Long Trade

In June, Hougan said his firm now focuses more on stablecoins and tokenization than on bitcoin itself, after meeting more than 40 financial advisors. Those advisors collectively manage about $175 trillion, and he called them the best hope for the next bull market.

His picks put Ethereum as the settlement layer, Solana as the high-throughput alternative, and Uniswap as the exchange. Uniswap's fee switch, approved by token holders on Christmas Day, now burns UNI bought with protocol revenue. Daily burns topped $1 million for the first time on Sept. 4, driven by trading on Robinhood Chain.
