Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis confirmed that hackers used agentic AI to break into its systems and internal tools. The breach exposed customer names, email addresses, user IDs and organizational roles. Chainalysis says the incident is unrelated to the $6.3 billion Binance hack.
Chainalysis confirmed on Friday that hackers used agentic AI to gain unauthorized access to its systems and internal tools. The attack exposed customer names, email addresses, user IDs and organizational roles.
What the breach exposed
The firm's statement says the investigation found no evidence of unauthorized access to investigation content, authentication credentials or session tokens. Chainalysis describes the compromised customer data as non-sensitive.
Now the team is investigating the unauthorized activity further, patching vulnerabilities and hardening its systems. It has also notified all of its customers.
Chainalysis did not name the attacker or detail the agentic AI techniques used, and it did not reveal the date of the attack. Security experts note that agentic AI systems can autonomously identify vulnerabilities, coordinate multi-step attacks and adapt in real time.
No link to the Binance hack
The incident comes amid a major crypto security breach: Binance suffered a hack worth $6.3 billion. Chainalysis argues its own incident is not related to that theft, and no link between the two is confirmed.
Chainalysis had earlier blamed the hacker group TraderTraitor for the Binance hack. TraderTraitor is a unit of North Korea's Lazarus Group, which has exploited crypto firms including Bybit, Bitget and Ronin Network.
North Korea-linked losses climb
Chainalysis reports that suspected North Korea-linked hacks account for nearly 89% of reported crypto hack losses so far this year, up from 15% in 2021.
The average reported loss per suspected DPRK-linked hack rose from $50.65 million in 2021 to $185.65 million in 2026 YTD, about 3.7x larger. From 2021 through October 29, 2026, these hacks account for $13.24 billion of the $22.34 billion in reported losses, about 59%.
