Eurozone headline inflation jumped to 3.8% year-on-year in September, beating the 3.7% consensus forecast, while core inflation edged up only to 2.5%, matching expectations. Energy costs drove most of the acceleration, leaving underlying price pressure largely contained.
Eurozone headline inflation accelerated from 3.2% to 3.8% year-on-year in September, beating the 3.7% consensus estimate. Consumer prices rose 0.6% month-on-month. Core inflation, however, edged up only from 2.4% to 2.5% year-on-year, exactly matching expectations.
Energy Drives the Headline Jump
Energy inflation surged from 14.3% to 18.8% year-on-year, making it the dominant driver of the headline acceleration. Energy prices also climbed another 3.9% month-on-month. Food, alcohol and tobacco inflation also firmed, rising from 1.1% to 1.4%. Services inflation increased from 3.0% to 3.2%, pointing to some renewed domestic price pressure.
Underlying Price Pressure Stays Contained
September delivered a hotter headline but a far steadier underlying inflation picture. Non-energy industrial goods inflation eased from 1.2% to 1.1%, signaling the acceleration did not spread broadly across core categories. The broader measure excluding energy alone rose from 2.1% to 2.3%, still well below the headline rate.
The report reads as an intensifying energy-led inflation shock rather than a comparable surge in broad underlying price growth, since core inflation excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco matched the 2.5% consensus forecast even as the headline rate overshot expectations.
