Germany and the United Arab Emirates will sign investment, artificial intelligence and energy agreements worth several billion dollars on Thursday, a senior UAE diplomat said. The deals arrive as both countries expand their strategic ties amid the war with Iran and a changed relationship with Washington.
Germany and the United Arab Emirates plan to sign investment, artificial intelligence and energy agreements worth several billion dollars on Thursday, according to Lana Nusseibeh, a minister of state in the UAE's foreign ministry, who spoke to reporters in Berlin on Wednesday.
Nusseibeh, a former UAE ambassador to the United Nations, said the agreements would open a new stage in relations between the two countries. The two nations already maintain partnerships in several areas and a trade relationship worth approximately $15.5 billion annually, excluding oil.
Growing geopolitical uncertainty has pushed the two governments closer together. The war with Iran and a changed relationship with the United States have prompted both countries to expand their strategic networks and strengthen ties with existing partners.
The agreements will be signed during a visit to Berlin by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Nusseibeh did not give specific details, but said the deals would include a framework for technology cooperation bringing together researchers and investors, along with energy transition agreements building on existing partnerships in renewables, hydrogen and energy efficiency.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the Gulf region in February, shortly before the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran. That war remains unresolved more than six months later.
