Google is previewing a crypto security service that splits control of a private key across separate environments. Commercial availability is targeted for early 2027, and Alphabet uses the technology for its own assets on Ethereum and Solana.

Google has unveiled plans for a crypto security service that distributes private-key control across separate computing environments. The company targets commercial availability in early 2027 as financial institutions look for stronger protection for digital assets.

Google Multi-Party Compute is in private testing

Google Multi-Party Compute is undergoing private testing with several major financial institutions ahead of its presentation at the company's inaugural digital assets symposium in New York. Alphabet has begun using the technology to secure its own digital assets on Ethereum and Solana. Google has not named the testing institutions or disclosed pricing.

The system uses multi-party computation to divide control of a private key among several independent participants. Authorized parties cooperate to sign transactions without assembling the whole key in one place. Under the proposed design, a bank could require approvals from two of three participants or five of seven before authorizing a transfer.

Why compromised keys drive the push

Compromised credentials remain a persistent source of losses. Chainalysis estimated that private-key compromises accounted for 43.8% of cryptocurrency stolen during 2024.

Google is positioning the offering as a defense against sophisticated cyberattacks, according to CoinGape. The same report says that, while no quantum computer exists yet, roughly 6.9 million Bitcoin are potentially vulnerable to future quantum threats because their public keys have been exposed. Google MPC currently focuses on stopping compromised credentials and unauthorized transactions.

Google enters a field with established providers

The proposed service would compete with providers such as Fireblocks, Fordefi and BitGo in institutional custody. Google is targeting banks that want to keep direct control of their custody operations while using external technology.

Google plans to support ECDSA and Ed25519 signing at general availability. Its architecture is intended to accommodate future post-quantum upgrades, but the company has not announced a timetable for them.
