Yemen's Houthi militia struck southern Saudi Arabia with drones and missiles on September 8, hitting Aramco oil facilities and civilian areas and injuring 73 people. Brent crude jumped to $99 a barrel, and the 2022 ceasefire that had governed the Yemen conflict effectively collapsed. Saudi Arabia answered with dozens of airstrikes within hours, while a separate IAEA report on Iranian nuclear-site activity added to the region's tension.

Yemen's Houthi militia launched a coordinated wave of drone and ballistic missile strikes across southern Saudi Arabia on September 8, injuring 73 people, including women and children, in what Saudi officials called the gravest escalation of the Yemen conflict in years. The strikes hit Abha, Jazan, Najran and Khamis Mushait, mixing civilian locations with energy infrastructure, and sparked fires at Saudi Aramco facilities that forced a temporary shutdown of operations there.

Brent crude nears the $100 mark

The disruption sent Brent crude to $99 a barrel, its highest level since July 2026 and a price that puts the benchmark close to the $100 mark traders have watched all year. The spike reflects more than the immediate damage to Aramco sites — it prices in the risk that the Yemen conflict spreads further into the region's energy arteries, with the Red Sea shipping corridor facing renewed danger after years of Houthi attacks on commercial vessels.

Saudi Arabia answers within hours

Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said the strikes were retaliation for prior Saudi airstrikes on Yemeni territory, targeting airbases and oil-related facilities. Saudi Arabia condemned the attack as a grave escalation and vowed to retaliate; within 12 hours, reports documented 54 Saudi airstrikes carried out on September 9 and 10.

The 2022 ceasefire is gone

The UN-brokered ceasefire that had held since 2022 had already been fraying for months, and these attacks drove the remaining life out of it. UN officials called the deterioration alarming and warned it dramatically reduces the prospects for any political resolution, raising the stakes around geopolitical risk across the region.

Iran's shadow deepens

The attacks are now explicitly tied to the broader 2026 Iran conflict, which also involves the US and Israel; the Houthis operate as one of several Iranian proxy forces in the region. Separately, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported activity at Iran's Pickaxe Mountain site near the Natanz uranium complex, with satellite images showing ongoing construction while the agency remains unable to access the location. The report to the UN Security Council marks the first such escalation in 20 years.
