Iran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz within two days if Washington meets its conditions. President Trump says talks are progressing, but both sides warn that renewed fighting could spread regionally.
Iran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz within two days if Washington meets its conditions. The offer marks a breakthrough in talks to end the war.
Qatari mediators shorten the timeline
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Qatari mediators had helped shorten Tehran's seven-day reopening proposal. Under the revised sequence, the U.S. would take steps on the first day, and shipping would resume on the second.
Tehran's demands include sanctions relief, the release of frozen funds, restored oil waivers, and recognition of a shipping route designated with Oman. Iran also wants a reduced U.S. military presence and an end to attacks on Lebanon.
Washington signals progress but keeps threats
According to Investing.com, Trump said negotiations were "going fine", and that Iran wanted a deal, although Washington was not in a hurry. He also renewed threats against Iranian nuclear facilities, including the site known as Pickaxe Mountain.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Trump had not decided whether to launch fresh strikes and that a diplomatic settlement remained possible. An Iranian delegation was in Doha for consultations with mediators, with no direct U.S.-Iran talks planned.
Security chief Mohsen Rezaei said a letter from Vice President JD Vance signaled a more conciliatory U.S. tone. However, he insisted Tehran would not reopen Hormuz before its conditions were met.
Military warnings and shipping risks persist
Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei ordered commanders to prepare an immediate response to any attack without geographical restrictions. Iranian officials threatened strikes against a wider range of targets.
Shipping risks remain acute. Iran's navy said a tanker caught fire after striking mines east of Hormuz, without identifying the vessel or reporting the crew's condition. U.S. Central Command said its blockade of Iranian ports had redirected 144 commercial ships.
Disruption to the waterway continues to threaten global energy supplies. Germany's gas storage industry warned that reserves stood at 61.35% ahead of winter, below the country's 80% target.
