Iran says it has received an official U.S. response to its proposal to end the seven-month conflict between the two countries, according to the Associated Press. Officials have not disclosed the response's content or whether Washington rejected it, and President Donald Trump previously dismissed Tehran's offer as unacceptable.
Tehran receives Washington's answer
Iranian officials say they have received an official U.S. response to Tehran's proposal to end the seven-month conflict between the two countries, the AP reported. The officials did not specify what the response said, nor whether Washington rejected it.
Iran's foreign minister presented the U.S. response to President Masoud Pezeshkian, a government spokesperson told the state-aligned IRNA news agency. The disclosure follows Trump's earlier rebuff of Tehran's proposal, when he suggested Iran was only seeking a deal because it was losing badly and said the offer would not be acceptable.
Mediators push for a ceasefire
Mediators from Qatar and Pakistan have reportedly been facilitating indirect negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, working toward a lasting ceasefire. Those talks were held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York last week, which leaders from both countries attended.
Meanwhile, Washington has centered its recent pressure campaign on squeezing Iran economically. The White House has imposed tough sanctions and an ongoing naval blockade of Iranian ports, and Iran's currency has recently weakened to a record low.
New sanctions target supply network
The U.S. Treasury Department said on Tuesday that it is bringing further sanctions against people and companies found to be enablers of Iran's military supply network. Ten individuals and entities in Iran, Hong Kong, and Pakistan now face sanctions over accusations of procuring weapons for Iran's defense ministry, according to the AP.
On Tuesday, Trump said Iran is failing very badly. According to the AP, Trump added that the war would be over "very soon" — a conflict that began with a joint U.S. and Israeli assault on Iran in late February.
Trump initially predicted the war would last mere weeks. He has since said the fighting will not conclude until after the U.S. midterm elections on November 3.
