Government bond yields surged across major economies this week, with Japan's 10-year yield hitting its highest level since 1996 and US yields reaching their highest since 2007. The UK, Germany, France, India, and Canada all saw similar spikes, while China's yield moved the opposite way.
Japan's 10-year government bond yield climbed to 3.08% this week, its highest level since 1996. The move came even though the Bank of Japan raised its policy rate to 1.25% earlier this month.
US Treasury yields moved in the same direction this week, hitting their highest level since 2007 before easing slightly on Friday. Like Japan's yield, the US benchmark remains close to this week's peak.
Several other major economies recorded similar increases this week. The UK's yield reached 5.36%, and Germany's climbed to 3.61%.
France's yield rose to 4.68% over the same period. Further afield, India's yield hit 7.12%, and Canada's yield reached 3.93%.
China stood out as the exception to this week's moves. Its yield fell to 1.68%, moving lower even as every other major economy listed here saw yields climb.
