MongoDB's president and CEO, Chirantan "CJ" Desai, resigned on September 28, 2026, to become Meta Platforms' chief enterprise platform officer, and MongoDB shares plummeted 17% on the news. Desai will lead Meta's newly launched enterprise AI business and report directly to Mark Zuckerberg, while MongoDB reinstalled former CEO Dev Ittycheria as interim leader.
MongoDB shares plummeted 17% on Monday after Desai resigned, effective immediately, to join Meta. Desai will report directly to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and lead the company's newly launched Meta Enterprise Platform business.
According to a Meta release cited by CNBC, the unit will initially focus on bringing Meta's full technology stack, including the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code, to businesses and developers. Zuckerberg confirmed the hire on X, writing "We believe superintelligence will create significant new opportunities for all people and businesses" in the post naming Desai chief enterprise platform officer. Before taking MongoDB's top job in November 2025, Desai held product and engineering leadership roles at Cloudflare and ServiceNow.
MongoDB's board named Ittycheria, who had served as CEO for 11 years before stepping down in November 2025, as interim president and CEO. The company also reaffirmed its Q3 and full-year fiscal 2027 guidance and pressed ahead with its Investor Day at the Nasdaq MarketSite the following day.
The poaching follows an increase in Meta's AI investment: the company raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to $130 billion, up from $125 billion, with the increase driven almost entirely by AI infrastructure spending. That leaves the pressure on MongoDB's interim leadership to prove its long-term strategy remains intact.
