Microsoft reached a $4 trillion market capitalization on Monday for the first time in nearly a year. Investors are returning to the stock after earlier worries about its cloud growth and software business.
Microsoft achieved a $4 trillion market capitalization for the first time in nearly a year. The company is also within a hair of its highest-ever market value.
Shares closed up 1.1% on Monday, leaving Microsoft worth $4.02 trillion at the close.
A round trip since last October
Microsoft was last worth $4 trillion on Oct. 29, 2025, and it hit a market-cap peak of $4.029 trillion the day before, according to Dow Jones Market Data. It is now the fourth-largest company in the U.S. by market value, behind only Nvidia, Apple and Amazon.com.
The stock first fell out of fashion on Wall Street amid concerns about its cloud growth and the durability of its software business. Lately, however, investors are seeing those businesses in a fresh light, and shares are up more than 50% from their 2026 low, which came in June.
Why investors are coming back
Microsoft has re-emerged as a stable software bet as investors question how turbulence at top AI labs could affect the companies that rely on their models and spending. It has also carved out a niche as a model-agnostic software company, meaning its offerings work with those from various AI players.
D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria told MarketWatch that the acceleration is a big reason for investors' renewed optimism. He said the company has seen increasing returns on its AI spending. StoneX analyst Yi Fu Lee said the company is likely to continue on its growth trajectory as long as it keeps showing healthy cloud growth, AI returns and adoption of its Copilot assistant.
Lee also pointed to Microsoft's hardware event last week, where Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made an appearance to help show off an AI laptop collaboration, as an example of a broadening AI strategy. Argus Research analyst Joseph Bonner said investors view the company as trustworthy. According to MarketWatch, he said "corporate America may just have more trust" in Azure and Microsoft's AI harnesses than in the frontier AI labs.
