Microsoft shares have gained 36.4% this quarter, putting the stock on track for its best three-month run since 1998. Analysts credit a "flight to quality" toward AI-linked companies with a clear monetization story, fueled by an exceptionally strong fiscal fourth-quarter report and Azure's fastest growth since 2022.

Microsoft shares have climbed 36.4% so far this quarter, putting the stock on track for its strongest quarterly performance since the first quarter of 1998, when it rose 38.5%, according to Dow Jones Market Data cited by MarketWatch. The rally follows a rough start to the year: Microsoft's first-quarter drop of 23.5% had been its worst quarterly decline since the 2008-09 financial crisis.

A 'flight to quality' toward AI winners

StoneX analyst Yi Fu Lee attributes the surge to a "flight to quality" dynamic, as investors hunting AI exposure have come to see Microsoft as "one of the highest-quality platforms in technology."

Wall Street has increasingly focused on companies with a clear story for monetizing AI, and Microsoft has met that bar recently, according to MarketWatch. Tigress Financial's Ivan Feinseth agreed the rally reflects a meaningful improvement in the evidence behind Microsoft's AI investment case.

Lee also said the market has shifted from asking who has the best AI model to who controls the enterprise context — the infrastructure, databases, and systems AI runs on — a position Microsoft holds by hosting large language models from developers including OpenAI and Anthropic.

Record earnings behind the rally

The rally builds on Microsoft's fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 earnings, released July 29, when revenue reached $90.0 billion, up 18% year-over-year, and net income rose 31% to $35.8 billion under GAAP accounting, Crypto Briefing reported. Azure grew revenue 43% year-over-year, beating a roughly 40% consensus estimate and pushing its annual revenue past $100 billion for the first time.

Shares then jumped roughly 15% to 16% on July 30, the largest single-day percentage gain for the stock since 2008, adding roughly $450 billion to Microsoft's market capitalization in a single session — the biggest one-day market-cap addition in US market history, according to Crypto Briefing. The company's commercial backlog hit a record $678 billion, and its 365 Copilot suite surpassed 30 million paid seats.

Copilot's expanding role

Microsoft's Copilot announcement last week has strengthened the case that the company can expand AI revenue beyond its traditional subscription offerings, MarketWatch reported. Lee described Microsoft as evolving Copilot from a productivity assistant into a broader enterprise AI platform, pointing to its Home, Code, and Autopilot capabilities.

Whether the rally holds will depend on Azure sustaining the approximately 45% growth Microsoft has forecast for the coming quarter, up from the 43% just reported.
