U.S. natural gas storage rose 64 billion cubic feet last week, topping both the forecast and the prior week's build. The bigger-than-expected injection points to softer demand and typically weighs on prices, while also carrying implications for the Canadian dollar given Canada's energy sector.

Natural gas held in underground storage rose by 64 billion cubic feet over the past week, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). The build topped the forecasted increase of 63 billion cubic feet. That marked a sharp jump from the previous week's increase of 53 billion cubic feet.

The gap between the actual and forecasted figures points to lower-than-expected demand for natural gas. Such an outcome is typically considered bearish for prices, as it suggests supply is more than sufficient to meet current market needs. As a result, the larger storage build could put downward pressure on prices as the market adjusts to the higher inventory levels.

The jump from 53 billion cubic feet to 64 billion cubic feet also underscores the volatility that often characterizes natural gas markets week to week. While the EIA report is a U.S. indicator, its reach extends beyond domestic borders: Canada's robust energy sector means swings in natural gas inventories can have a pronounced impact on the Canadian dollar.
