Nvidia is preparing to ship roughly 500,000 RTX PRO 5500 Blackwell workstation GPUs per quarter into China starting late December 2026, a plan that could generate about $26 billion a year. By classifying the chip as a workstation product rather than a data-center part, Nvidia may sidestep the US export restrictions that have blocked its top AI chips from the Chinese market.

A workstation label with a $26 billion payoff

Nvidia is planning to ship roughly 500,000 units per quarter of its new RTX PRO 5500 Blackwell workstation GPU into China starting late December 2026. The plan could generate approximately $6.5 billion in quarterly revenue, or about $26 billion annually.

The distinction driving the plan is classification. By labeling the RTX PRO 5500 a professional workstation GPU rather than a data-center chip, Nvidia may thread the needle on US export rules that have cut off its most lucrative China sales for years.

Beijing reviews orders from ByteDance and Alibaba

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is reportedly assessing purchase plans from major tech firms before potentially approving the deals. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is said to be considering an order of approximately 1 million units alone, while Alibaba's purchase proposals are also under review.

The RTX PRO 5500 packs 84 GB of GDDR7 ECC memory and 21,760 CUDA cores, with a thermal design power of up to 600 watts. Pricing in China lands between 85,000 and 90,000 yuan per unit, roughly $13,000. The GPU is optimized for AI inference workloads, built to run trained models rather than train them from scratch.

Why the classification matters

US export controls on advanced semiconductors to China have been tightening since late 2022, primarily targeting the data-center GPUs used to train and run large-scale AI models. As a result, Nvidia's flagship data-center products have been progressively locked out of the Chinese market. Nvidia previously designed China-specific chips like the H20 to comply with export thresholds, only to see those thresholds tightened further.

The RTX PRO 5500's workstation classification could place it outside the scope of current export control frameworks. For ByteDance, acquiring a million inference-optimized GPUs signals serious ambitions in deploying AI products at scale, and Alibaba's interest follows a similar logic as it expands its cloud and AI service offerings across Asia.

Because shipments would not begin until late December 2026, revenue would not start flowing until Nvidia's fiscal Q1 2028 at the earliest.
