Russia is speeding up development of the Northern Sea Route as Europe's January 2027 ban on Russian LNG approaches. LNG still anchors the route, but Rosneft's Vostok Oil project and rising crude shipments could eventually add far greater volume. Seasonal ice and a shortage of ice-class tankers remain the main limits on how fast it can grow.

Russia's Northern Sea Route is becoming a central artery for Eurasian energy trade, and Europe's January 2027 ban on Russian LNG is pushing Moscow to bring it online sooner than planned. For cargo sailing from Murmansk to Qingdao, the Arctic route covers about 6,400 km and takes roughly 20 days, compared with 12,400 km and around 39 days via the Suez Canal.

LNG volumes climb along the Arctic route

Arctic LNG 2, the Gydan Peninsula project, is designed to produce 19.8 million tonnes a year across three floating trains. The project has loaded 41 cargoes totaling about 3.1 million tonnes this year, already exceeding last year's Northern Sea Route volume. Since 2025, Arc7 icebreaking carriers have ferried cargo to floating storage units near Kamchatka and Murmansk for ship-to-ship transfer onto conventional vessels, letting the specialized carriers run shorter, more frequent voyages.

Novatek is also preparing to advance Arctic LNG 2's third train, after two prefabricated modules shipped from China reached Russia's Belokamenka yard in mid-August, with seven more still in China at varying stages of completion. Yamal LNG, Novatek's plant in Sabetta that has historically sold mostly to Europe, is shifting east as the EU ban nears: about 500,000 tonnes sailed east through the Northern Sea Route in August 2026, up from 350,000 tonnes in August 2025.

Crude oil traffic is smaller but rising

Crude oil shipments remain modest next to LNG, but they are climbing. Six Urals cargoes made the Arctic voyage in 2023, rising to nine in 2025, and six more had already sailed before September 2026.

Overall, oil movements reached 12 vessels in August, against nine a year earlier. China has been the almost-exclusive destination so far, though shipments are expected to be tested for India and other markets.

Vostok Oil could change the route's scale

Rosneft's Vostok Oil project, covering 52 license areas and 13 fields with a resource base exceeding 48 billion barrels, could eventually add far greater scale than LNG. Its first-stage pipeline runs roughly 790 km from Vankor to Sever Bay. Sever Bay is planned to handle an initial 30 million tonnes a year, or about 625,000 barrels a day, before expanding to 2.1 million barrels a day by 2030. Moscow is also seeking outlets beyond China, including Indonesia, where crude output stood near 580,000 barrels a day in early August, below the government's 610,000-barrel target.

The route's growth still faces real limits. Traffic stays concentrated in the June-to-October season, and a persistent shortage of ice-class tankers continues to constrain how fast volumes can expand.
