Russia hit Ukraine's power grid with one of the biggest energy assaults in months, striking facilities in Kyiv and other major cities as the country heads into winter. Seven people were killed in the attacks, officials said Wednesday, and state grid operator Ukrenergo imposed emergency power cuts in Kyiv and three other regions.

Officials describe the barrage

Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi said via Telegram Wednesday that Russia had struck the country's energy infrastructure. According to Koretskyi: "Russia has launched massive strikes on energy infrastructure". He added that, according to a translation, there had been practically no day since summer without an attack on energy infrastructure, but called this the first massive, combined strike since the end of the last heating season.

Russia says strike also hit port infrastructure

Russia's Ministry of Defense said Wednesday it had delivered a strike using ground-based high-precision weapons and attack drones against a communication center in Kyiv, Ukraine's energy system facilities, and the port infrastructure of Izmail in the southwestern Odesa region. The ministry had said in late August that it was preparing such a bombardment as a response to Ukrainian attacks on Russia's own fuel and energy facilities.

A difficult winter ahead

Freezing temperatures are forecast at night in Kyiv over the coming days, compounding the impact of the power cuts. Ukrainian officials and national security experts had warned about the prospect of a Russian air campaign against the power grid ahead of winter, citing an acute air defense shortage.
