Saudi-backed Yemeni forces have retaken Bab al-Mandab, a strategic Red Sea chokepoint, from Houthi forces, reversing gains the group made along Yemen's southwestern coast in September. Prediction markets have since trimmed the odds of a Houthi advance into Aden, while the Iran-backed movement has not responded to the announcement.
Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Yemen said Friday that Saudi-backed Yemeni forces have regained control of Bab al-Mandab from Houthi fighters. The move reverses territorial gains the Houthis had made along Yemen's southwestern coast in September.
The Houthi movement, which receives backing from Iran, had not issued a response to the ambassador's statement at the time of publication, though Houthi media had previously denied losing control of the area.
Prediction markets trim Aden odds
Bettors have pared back the likelihood of Houthi forces reaching Aden following the announcement. The probability of Houthi forces entering Aden by October 31, 2026 fell to 7.5%, down from 8% a day earlier and 10% a week ago.
The longer-term contract moved in the same direction. Markets now put the odds of a Houthi entry into Aden by December 31, 2026 at 24.5%, down from 28% previously, suggesting traders see the recapture of Bab al-Mandab as a setback for the Houthis' broader campaign.
What to watch
Observers are watching for any official response or strategic shift from the Houthi leadership that could move pricing further. Developments around Taiz, Lahj, or the Al-Anad Air Base may also shape perceptions of the group's capacity to reach Aden.
An escalation in Saudi air support, or additional reinforcements from the UAE, could be consistent with a further reduction in the likelihood of a Houthi entrance into Aden.
