US President Donald Trump said he plans to visit a Texas tanker carrying the first oil received from Venezuela under a deal struck after Washington deposed the country's former leader. He described the cargo as a million-barrel gift to the United States.
US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he planned to visit a tanker in Texas that holds the first oil received from Venezuela. The shipment follows a deal Washington made after deposing the country's former leader.
Trump announced the agreement in August. It grants the United States access to a fifth of Venezuela's crude reserves.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said Venezuela had sent him a boatload of a million barrels of oil as a gift, and that he was giving it to the United States. In a later Truth Social post, he called it the "first shipment of BILLIONS of Barrels to come."
The White House said in September that oil from the deal would probably reach US reserves in November. The United States has worked closely with the interim government led by acting President Delcy Rodriguez since US forces captured President Nicolas Maduro in January.
