The US information sector shed 23,000 jobs in August, its steepest monthly decline in over a year, pushing sector employment to its lowest level since 2015 outside the pandemic. The cuts came even as the broader US economy added 162,000 jobs and unemployment held at 4.1%.

The US information sector shed 23,000 jobs in August, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Employment in the sector fell to 2.745 million, the lowest headcount since 2015 outside the pandemic-era drop.

Losses were concentrated in a handful of subsectors. Computing infrastructure providers, data processing firms, and web hosting companies lost 8,000 jobs combined, the heaviest toll. Publishing industries cut 7,000 positions. Broadcasting and content providers dropped another 5,000 jobs.

This marked the sector's steepest single-month loss in more than a year. Over the prior twelve months, the information sector had averaged 8,000 job losses per month, making August's drop nearly three times worse than that trend. Year-over-year, sector employment has fallen by 115,000 jobs since August 2025. That marks a decline of 4.0%.

Elsewhere, the rest of the US labor market kept growing. Total nonfarm payrolls rose by 162,000 in August. The national unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%. Food services and drinking places alone added 59,000 jobs during the month.
