US special envoy Steve Witkoff publicly thanked Vladimir Putin for a three-day ceasefire timed to his Moscow visit, then prepared to travel on to Kyiv with Jared Kushner for the first talks with Ukrainian leaders since the conflict's latest escalation. The Kremlin says the pause was a diplomatic courtesy for the American delegation, not a humanitarian gesture.

Steve Witkoff touched down in Moscow on September 5 and thanked Vladimir Putin for announcing a ceasefire, a gesture that would have been unthinkable from a US envoy in a prior administration. The three-day pause in fighting runs from September 5 through September 8, timed specifically to coincide with the American diplomatic visit.

A pause framed as a courtesy, not a gesture

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov drew a direct line between the ceasefire and the envoys' arrival, framing the pause as a diplomatic courtesy rather than a humanitarian gesture. The ceasefire followed a period of intensified violence: Russian forces had escalated attacks, and Ukraine responded with counterstrikes targeting energy infrastructure.

Shuttle diplomacy toward Kyiv

Witkoff was not traveling alone. Jared Kushner joined him on the trip, and the pair are expected to meet with Putin before heading to Kyiv on September 6. That would mark the envoys' first engagement with Ukrainian leaders since the conflict's most recent escalation.

The Moscow-to-Kyiv itinerary suggests direct talks between the two capitals remain out of reach for now. Kushner's prior diplomatic portfolio, most notably the Abraham Accords in the Middle East, gives the White House a track record to point to as it adds him to the delegation.

Witkoff's history with the Kremlin

This is far from Witkoff's first trip to Russia. By late 2025, he had made at least six visits focused on the Ukraine peace process, working primarily with Kirill Dmitriev to sketch a framework for a negotiated settlement. The Kyiv leg of that diplomacy, however, has been conspicuously absent until now.
