You open a gold chart at 9:30 in the morning in Mumbai and nothing happens. Flat candles, a few pips of range. Gold trading time in India runs from roughly 2:30 AM Monday to 2:30 AM Saturday IST, but the hours that move are 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM, when London and New York trade together.
There is a reason the morning is dead. On the World Gold Council’s most recent full-year count, gold turned over an average of $361bn a day, split almost evenly between London’s OTC market and the futures exchanges. Both are shut while India works. The chart at 9:30 AM is not a quiet market. It is an empty one.
What XAUUSD is
XAU is the ISO code for one troy ounce of gold. XAUUSD quotes that ounce in US dollars and trades like a currency pair: you are long gold and short dollars, or the reverse.
That is the gold symbol in forex, and it is a different instrument from an MCX gold futures contract, a Sovereign Gold Bond, or the rate chalked up at your jeweller. One metal, four clocks, four prices. The MCX difference gets its own section below, because that confusion is where most questions about gold trading hours start.
XAUUSD market open time in India
Spot gold trades from Monday morning to Saturday morning IST, with a one-hour break every day.
| Event | US on DST (mid-Mar to early Nov) | US on standard time (early Nov to mid-Mar) |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly open | Monday 2:30–3:30 AM IST | Monday 3:30–4:30 AM IST |
| Weekly close | Saturday 2:30 AM IST | Saturday 3:30 AM IST |
| Daily break | 2:30–3:30 AM IST | 3:30–4:30 AM IST |
The open is a range on purpose. Brokers differ. Some open XAUUSD with the forex week at 5:00 PM New York time on Sunday, which lands at 2:30 AM IST. Others align it with the CME Globex gold session an hour later, so 3:30 AM IST. Both are normal. Check your platform’s instrument specification, and don’t take a blog’s word for it, this one included.
The daily break exists because COMEX gold stops for 60 minutes at 5:00 PM New York time, and OTC pricing thins out alongside it. Orders resting through that window can be rejected, and the spreads immediately after it are the widest of the day.
Everything shifts an hour later from early November, when the US drops daylight saving. India never adopted it, so IST stays pinned at UTC+5:30 and the international sessions appear to slide around a clock that never moves.
Gold trading time in India: the four sessions in IST
Gold does not trade in sessions, technically. It trades continuously. But the people who move it work office hours in four cities, and the gap between those cities is what you see on the chart.
| Session | IST (Mar–Nov) | IST (Nov–Mar) | What gold does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 3:30 AM – 12:30 PM | 2:30 AM – 11:30 AM | Barely moves |
| Tokyo | 5:30 AM – 2:30 PM | 5:30 AM – 2:30 PM | Narrow range, physical Asian demand |
| London | 12:30 PM – 9:30 PM | 1:30 PM – 10:30 PM | Direction forms |
| New York | 5:30 PM – 2:30 AM | 6:30 PM – 3:30 AM | Volume peaks, then fades |
Tokyo is the one row that never moves, because Japan has no daylight saving. That makes 5:30 AM to 2:30 PM IST the only line in the schedule worth memorising permanently.
The best time to trade XAUUSD
5:30 PM to 9:30 PM IST. That is the London and New York overlap, and for most traders in India it is the answer.
Four hours, both of the venues that actually price gold trading at once, every scheduled US data release inside the window, and the London afternoon benchmark auction sitting in the middle of it. Spreads are tightest here and orders fill where you expect. From November to March the window becomes 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM IST.
It also starts after the Indian working day ends, which is why gold suits Indian retail traders better than almost any other instrument.
Three other windows, ranked honestly.
12:30 PM to 2:30 PM IST, the London open. The day’s direction often forms in London’s first two hours. Volatility is real but the book is thinner than in the overlap, and false breaks are common. This window rewards traders who have studied the Asian range and know where it should give way.
5:30 AM to 12:30 PM IST, the Asian session. Narrow ranges, wide spreads, moves that reverse. It is useful for one thing: marking the overnight high and low that London will come back and test. Trading it directly means paying spread for noise.
After 9:30 PM IST. London goes home and the book thins. A move that began at 6:00 PM usually extends or reverses in this window instead of starting here. Fine for managing a position you already hold, poor for opening one, unless there is a Fed event on the calendar.
The appointments that move gold, in IST
Volatility in XAUUSD is not spread evenly. Most of the week’s range gets created in a handful of minutes you can write in a diary.
| Event | IST (Mar–Nov) | IST (Nov–Mar) |
|---|---|---|
| London gold AM auction | 3:00 PM | 4:00 PM |
| COMEX US pit hours begin | 5:50 PM | 6:50 PM |
| US macro data (CPI, NFP, retail sales) | 6:00 PM | 7:00 PM |
| London gold PM auction | 7:30 PM | 8:30 PM |
| FOMC decision | 11:30 PM | 12:30 AM |
| Powell press conference | 12:00 AM | 1:00 AM |
The 6:00 PM IST slot carries the most weight. US inflation and jobs data land in that minute, and gold reprices against them faster than against anything else, because the trade is really about real interest rates. Non-farm payrolls in particular can produce a move larger than the two sessions before it combined.
Watch what happens to the quote in that minute. Bid 4,398.10, ask 4,398.45. One second later the screen reads 4,391.20 bid, 4,393.80 ask, and the spread that cost you 35 cents to cross now costs $2.60. A stop sitting 30 points away on an ordinary afternoon is not a 30-point stop at 6:00 PM on CPI day. Gold spreads behave differently from currency spreads under stress, and a position sized off the average range instead of the event range gets taken out by the spread, not the move.
XAUUSD vs MCX gold: two different clocks
Indian guides usually skip this part, and it produces more confusion than anything else on the topic.
| XAUUSD (spot gold) | MCX gold futures | |
|---|---|---|
| Hours (IST) | ~2:30 AM Mon to 2:30 AM Sat | 9:00 AM to 11:30 PM, Mon–Fri |
| Quote | US dollars per troy ounce | Rupees per 10 grams |
| Regulator | The broker’s home jurisdiction | SEBI |
| Currency risk | None beyond the dollar | USD/INR moves the rupee price |
Two consequences follow. MCX gold can close higher on a day when XAUUSD closes lower, because a weakening rupee lifts the domestic price even as the dollar price falls. Both quotes are correct; they measure different things.
And MCX sits shut from 11:30 PM to 9:00 AM IST while spot gold keeps trading. The overnight move happens whether you can reach it or not, which is why MCX gaps so reliably at the 9:00 AM open. The Indian commodity market timings guide covers the domestic exchange schedule segment by segment.
What XAUUSD moves with
Gold is quoted against the dollar, so half of every gold move is a dollar move. Traders hunting for XAUUSD correlation pairs are usually after these four relationships.
- US dollar index. Inverse, and the most dependable of the set. A dollar rally is a headwind for gold whatever gold itself is doing.
- US real yields. Inverse, and arguably the real driver. Gold pays no coupon, so holding it costs more when inflation-adjusted yields rise. This is why CPI prints move gold harder than geopolitical headlines do, and why most arguments about gold as an investment are really arguments about rates.
- XAGUSD. Positive and exaggerated. Silver follows gold’s direction with a bigger amplitude and a thinner book, which is a volatility problem wearing a correlation costume.
- USDJPY. Loosely inverse, because gold and the yen both collect haven flows.
Put the live XAU/USD chart next to a dollar index chart for a week. It teaches the relationship faster than any explanation.
Weekends, holidays and the Monday gap
XAUUSD closes Saturday morning and reopens Monday morning IST. The metal does not stop existing for those 48 hours, and neither does the news.
When something happens on a Sunday, price reopens wherever the first quotes settle, not where Friday closed. That gap is a live risk for anyone holding through the weekend, and a stop cannot manage it, because there is no market in which to fill the stop.
Two things cut the exposure. Closing or trimming before the Friday close is the obvious one. The other is newer: PrimeXBT launched a GOLD 24/7 instrument on PXTrader 2.0 in July 2026, quoting gold through the weekend so a position can be managed instead of merely hoped over. Weekend conditions differ from weekday conditions, so read the instrument specification before treating it as an ordinary session.
US and UK public holidays also matter more here than Indian ones. Gold liquidity thins on Thanksgiving, Christmas and the UK bank holidays, and a thin book produces moves that look like signals and are not. Diwali does nothing to XAUUSD, however long the queue outside the jewellery shop.
Gold trading time in India: hours to avoid
Three windows cost Indian traders money with some regularity.
The first minutes after the Monday open, while the weekend gap is still being priced and spreads are at their weekly widest.
The hour either side of the daily break at 2:30 AM IST, when quotes thin out and slippage stops being theoretical.
The Asian session, if your strategy needs momentum. A breakout system tuned on overlap data will generate nothing but false signals before noon.
If you are new to the instrument, how to trade gold covers the mechanics, and forex session times in India maps the same clocks onto currency pairs.
Gold at 9:00 AM IST and gold at 6:00 PM IST are the same instrument on paper and two different instruments on the chart. Trade the one that moves.

Yes, and the best hours are at night by Indian standards. The overlap runs to 9:30 PM IST and the New York session continues until 2:30 AM IST.
Is MCX gold the same as XAUUSD?

New York, and specifically its overlap with London. The London afternoon auction at 7:30 PM IST and the 6:00 PM IST US data window both sit inside it.
Does daylight saving change gold trading time in India?
India does not observe daylight saving, so IST never moves. The US and UK clocks do, which shifts every session and event time by an hour twice a year while your own clock stays put.
