On the NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) tracks the daily price movements of 30 large American companies. With the exception of the transportation and utility industries, the components are drawn from all major economic sectors. The DJIA, which was started in 1896, is made up of blue-chip stocks, with companies producing industrial and consumer goods accounting for about two-thirds of the index. The remaining members are drawn from all major economic sectors, such as information technology, entertainment, and financial services.
