The CAC 40 is a French stock market index that serves as a benchmark. As the name implies, the index consists of the 40 most significant values among the top 100 market capitalizations on the Paris Bourse (now Euronext Paris). The name comes from the early automation system Cotation Assiste en Continu of the Paris Bourse (Continuous Assisted Quotation). On December 31, 1987, the CAC 40 index was launched with a base value of 1000. On December 1, 2003, the index's weighting system was changed from total market capitalization to free float market capitalization.
The index represents the 40 most significant stocks traded on Paris stock exchange.
The euro is the European Union's monetary unit and currency, denoted by the sign €. It was first introduced as a non cash monetary unit in 1999, then as currency notes and coins in 2002. The euro replaced the currencies of participating EU countries as well as certain non-EU countries.
